Verizon 5G Testing, Apple Siri on OS X
Verizon, one of the leading wireless carriers in the United States is testing 5G service in select areas. Field tests are underway, with hopes that the improved scale and low latency of 5G technology will enable more individual smart devices to connect directly to the Internet without having to be tied to a wi-fi access point.
5G mobile networks are expected to deliver speeds exceeding 1 gigabit per second, improved capacity to meet the needs of billions of connected devices, and better signal reception in office buildings.
As of today, the 5G standard has not been finalized, with many analysts projecting an official rollout around the year 2020.
In other news, reports from 9to5Mac indicate that Siri is finally heading to Apple’s desktop platform, OS X, in 2016. Siri, the voice-controlled virtual assistant was introduced in the iPhone 4S in 2011 and has since found its way to the iPod, iPad, Apple TV, and Apple Watch.
This follows Microsoft’s introduction of Cortana in Windows 10, a move that Microsoft has received a lot of pushback from due to privacy and security concerns. There is no definite word yet on exactly how Apple will handle user privacy with OS X.
